Katrina Cain & Caitlin Cannon
November 14, 2023 @ 10:00 pm - 11:30 pm
-Katrina Cain is an Austin-based artist and songwriter. Steeped in Americana, she aims to use her blooming writing voice to answer the question: what defines belonging? A native Texan, she was born in Dallas, raised in a small New England town, and has moved over 20 times. When asked where she’s from, the response of “Dallas born, Yankee bred” is the easiest way to answer.
Katrina Cain’s music has been described as many genres from Americana, to country, to folk. Simply put, she’s a singer-songwriter. She is most known for her stand out performances on Season 15 of NBC’s The Voice, with her haunting rendition of “Rhiannon”.
Katrina Cain is a full-time performer, songwriter, and studio vocalist working in Austin, LA, and Nashville. Her June 2022 solo tour spanned 12 shows over 7 states. She has received notable press in Popsugar, Huffington Post, DittyTV, and radio stations across the country. Katrina was an official SXSW 2018 and 2019 performer, performed at Americanafest 2022 official events, and has opened for bands such as Gary P. Nunn, Angel White, Bri Bagwell, The West Texas Exiles, Abraham Alexander, Joshua Ray Walker, Isaac Hoskins, Phantogram, SarahJaffe, and Beth//James, among others.
-Caitlin Cannon Shortly after Caitlin Cannon took third place honors at this year’s Telluride Bluegrass festival, Saving Country Music published these prophetic words, “She’s not a songwriter for the winners. She’s a songwriter for the broken, the downtrodden, the losers, the motherf—. She sings about real sh— that most other songwriters don’t have the guts to broach. A crack pool player and a hilarious person on stage that could have a second career as a comedian, Caitlin Cannon is one of those country artists that slides so criminally under the radar, it angers the blood…”
While Cannon has done her share of winning (Songwriter Serenade 1st Place 2023) her ambitions do seem to reflect the above review. Inspired by the 33 year-to-date incarceration of her brother, she created a songwriting program in partnership with the Cultural Arts Alliance of Walton County (30A) that holds a residency for her at Walton Correctional where she teaches inmates to write songs.
She will often give agency to these voices by performing songs prisoners have written in her sets. It sounds heavy, but Cannon’s live shows are equal parts heartbreaking and hilarious. After making her comedic debut on Kill Tony (the no. 1 live podcast in the world) she began incorporating bits of standup into her musical act. If the job of a comic is to push boundaries, the job of a songwriter is to tell the truth and an artist to reveal beauty in the ugly parts of life, Cannon should be considered a triple threat.
After her critically acclaimed release The TrashCannon Album was named one of 2020’s Most Essential Albums (SCM) Cannon has learned even further into her southern roots thematically, without succumbing to derivative arrangements and sonic qualities. Her latest single, “Amarillo and Little Rock” (American Songwriter Song Contest Finalist 2022) precedes a new full length album produced by Misa Arriaga (Kacey Musgraves, Willie Nelson) expected to release in Spring of 2024. Cannon’s critically acclaimed debut, The TrashCannon Album was named one of the “Most Essential Albums of 2020″ by Saving Country Music, and was awarded the rare 9.5 out of 10 rating and Two ‘Guns’ Up. The compelling Lucky Break from her duo-project Side Pony followed in 2021. These days, Cannon has been busy completing another full-length production, engineered and produced by Misa Arriaga (Kacey Musgraves, Willie Nelson).
